Pasta Crate is a monthly subscription that delivers organic, handmade, small batch, artisan pastas produced by America’s top pasta makers to your home. Each box contains approximately 24-27 servings of pasta, perfect for a large family. In addition, the curators enclose suggested recipes for each pasta along with suggested wine pairings. Shipping within the United States is free, and it’s easy to skip or cancel a monthly shipment online from your account page.
Each box of pasta arrives well packaged along with a letter from Paolo de Armas, Founder and Owner of Pasta Crate, and recipe suggestions.
This month’s package contained three organic pastas from Sfoglini Pasta Shop in Brooklyn, New York City: Spaccatelli, Beet Fusilli and Zucca.
While Beet Fusilli is a special seasonal pasta, Spaccatelli and Zucca are available year round.
The enclosed letter from Paolo de Armas provided a nice introduction to Sfoglini and the mission of Pasta Crate.
All of the enclosed recipes were accessible, quick and easy to prepare.
The spaccatelli required less cooking than the other pastas. Using the enclosed recipe, I made a large batch of radicchio, blue cheese and walnut pasta. It would have easily fed four hungry teenage boys (as would all of the recipes I made from this box).
The creaminess of the blue cheese played off the bitterness of the radicchio nicely. The shallots and sage added a nice depth of flavor, while the walnuts provided an earthy grounding to the dish. I enjoyed this dish very much.
The beet fusilli is a spring-time seasonal offering at Sfoglini. It’s beautiful!
The enclosed recipe featured beets prominently, which makes sense since this organic pasta is made with beets. The only problem with that is that no one in my family is particularly fond of beets. So I decided to treat the beets in the pasta as one of a number of roasted veggies, highlighting a number of colorful spring vegetables including purple cauliflower, rainbow carrots, sweet onions, tomatoes, garlic and basil. The sauce was as plain as it could be–olive oil and parmesan cheese. The result was delicious. This preparation really let the pasta shine. I plan to snag some more of this for future pasta nights!
This zucca was the coolest pasta shape I have ever seen. My kids were crazy about it! This took a little bit more time to cook than I had anticipated because I didn’t have enough water in my pot–this pasta has a lot of volume!
The Zucca with Bacon, Squash and Sage was delicious! The enclosed recipe was extremely easy and fast to prepare. Because I don’t eat pork, I substituted turkey bacon for the real thing, and it was still divine. The recipe and the enclosed bag of pasta fed my family of four with leftovers. Even my husband, who wasn’t planning to eat, got seconds of this dish. So good!
I cannot overstate how much we enjoyed this box this month! All of the pastas were superb. The recipe pairings were excellent, easy and fast to prepare. This was a real win for us. We hope to receive many more shipments of this box in the upcoming months!
